The 1990 – 1991 season proved to be a fantastic one for Sheffield Wednesday as Ron Atkinson guided the owls out of the second division and back in to the top flight as they finished off in third position, gaining promotion via the play offs. The main delight of the season was reaching the final of the league cup, facing Manchester Unite din the Rumbelows cup final. They defeated the reds 1-0 at Wembley with a goal being scored by John Sheridan. The 1991 – 1992 season proved to be Sheffield Wednesday’s finest campaign in the football league since 1961 as they finished off the campaign in third position in a side that included new signing, Chris Woods.
The following year saw Sheffield Wednesday once again enjoy a fantastic season, finishing their first premiership season off in eleventh position, they ere unfortunate to not win any silverware, despite reaching the final of the FA Cup and league cup, suffering defeat against Arsenal on both occasions, despite the FA cup final going in to a replay.
The 1993 – 1994 campaign saw Wednesday finish off once again seventh position in the premier league and they enjoyed another fine run in the league cup, reaching the semi finals for the third time in four years, however suffering defeat against Man united in the last four.
