After reaching the quarter finals of the FA Cup in 1961, Wednesday were in magical form in the division one at the end of the 1960 – 1961 season as they finished it off in an emphatic second position, narrowly missing out on winning the league title. Under the managerial guidance of Vic Buckingham between 1961 and 1964, Wednesday were a major force in English football and occupied the top six positions throughout his reign in charge at the club.
Alan Brown took over in charge in 1964 and despite sliding down the first division into a disappointing 17th position at the end of the 1965 – 1966 season, he guided the Owls to a terrific run in the FA cup, taking them to the final of the cup competition. They narrowly suffered a 3-2 defeat in a thrilling encounter against Everton.
Ron Springett was Sheffield Wednesday’s star playing during this era, playing for the club between 1958 and 1969, making 345 league appearances for the owls. During this time period he became England’s number one goal keeper and went on to record 33 international appearances in goal for England. He helped the Owls gain promotion in to the first division in his debut campaign at the club and played in the 1966 FA Cup final.

Jack Marshall took charge at the club in 1968. Wednesday suffered relegation at the end of the 1969 – 1970 season as they finished off the campaign occupying the bottom position in the top flight, 22nd position
